Phoenix Coyotes: A History of Iconic Logos

From Winnipeg to the Desert

The Phoenix Coyotes have a rich history that spans multiple cities and several logos. The team began its journey in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA). In 1979, the Jets joined the National Hockey League (NHL) and remained in Winnipeg until 1996.

The Kachina Era

Upon their arrival in Phoenix, the Coyotes adopted a bold and unique logo featuring a kachina-inspired design. Kachinas are Hopi and Zuni spirits that appear in masked form for religious ceremonies. The Coyotes' kachina logo was designed by local artist John Christopher and quickly became synonymous with the team.

Classic Logos with a 90s Vibe

The Coyotes' original logos of the 1990s were highly creative and reflected the team's youthful spirit. The primary logo featured a stylized coyote head with a geometric, Southwestern-inspired pattern. The alternate logo was a black and white kachina mask with a vibrant red background. These logos captured the essence of the 90s and remain popular with fans today.

The Birth of a Symbol

The Coyotes' original logo was inspired by a collection of dolls. Artist John Christopher stumbled upon these dolls while visiting a local museum and was struck by their mystical qualities. He incorporated elements of their traditional Hopi and Zuni designs into the team's logo, creating a unique and meaningful symbol.

A Full-Time Return

For the 2021-2022 NHL season, the Arizona Coyotes announced the full-time return of the kachina logo as their primary logo. The move was met with overwhelming support from fans who have always held a special place in their hearts for this iconic design. The kachina logo has become an enduring symbol of the Coyotes' identity and a reminder of the team's rich past.
